Sol Neelman, a journalism graduate from the University of Oregon (’94), is a failed athlete turned sports photographer living large in Portlandia. In 2007, he left his staff job at The Oregonian to pursue a life-long project documenting sports culture around the globe. Last summer, Kehrer Verlag in Heidelberg, Germany published his first book, “Weird Sports.” He has a new weekly photo column on Wired.com and is already busy working on his next book, cleverly titled “Weird Sports Vol. 2.”

UONPPA goes bowling

A couple weeks ago, we went over to the bowling alley and threw some bowling balls around at various levels of skill. Photographs were made, a few points were scored, and fun was certainly had.

January 26: Flash Workshop

UONPPA is hosting a small flash workshop on Thursday, January 26th at 6:30 p.m. in room 204A of Agate Hall. This post will be updated with details as we figure them out.

The workshop will concentrate on the basics of using small flashes effectively. In particular, we’ll talk about ways to use on-camera flash in a nicer way, and ways of using off-camera strobes. Depending on the attendees, the workshop may focus more on the introductory or advanced side of things.

If you’re planning on joining us, please feel free to RSVP on the Facebook event page.

(Updated on Jan. 19 to add the room number.)

Workshop on DSLR Basics

Do people look like carrots in your photos?

Does the word “aperture” sound like it belongs in a jeopardy question?

Does the Manual mode on your camera seem more like a puzzle than a tool?

If so, the University of Oregon’s NPPA chapter is hosting a workshop to train beginning photographers on how to use DSLRs. (You know, those cameras with a hundred buttons and big lenses).
The workshop will focus on basic functions to help photographers know how to create quality photos.
This includes:
-Proper exposure using both Shutter Speed and Aperture. (Now the M selection will stand for “manual” rather than “mystery”)
-How to set White Balance. (No more orange aliens in your photos!)
-Different types of lenses. (What does 50mm f/1.8 mean anyway?)
-Shooting tips for different environments.
The workshop doesn’t require any previous photography experience, you do not need to own your own DSLR, and this is a great opportunity to start exploring photography.
